Russia’s ambassador to Tehran, Levan Dzhagaryan, told Sputnik that the joint naval exercise will be held in the Persian Gulf later this year or early next year.

According to IRNA, Dzhagaryan said that warships from Russia, Iran and China will all be present at the exercise, and the main purpose of this military drill “is to practice measures to ensure international maritime security and counter piracy”.

Noting that his country fully supports Iran’s request for full membership in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, the Russian ambassador to Tehran added: “Moscow and Tehran have close and similar positions on some international and regional affairs.

Given the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit to be held in the Tajik capital Dushanbe in September of this year (2021), I want to emphasize that Russia supports Iran’s request for full membership in the organization.”

“After the UN arms embargo against Iran are lifted, Tehran and Moscow will be negotiating on a wide range of weapons,” Dzhagaryan said.

“By lifting the embargo, the Russian negotiator will continue in constructive talks with its Iranian partners on a wide range of weapons,” he added.
