Ahmad Khatami, a member of the Assembly of Leadership Experts, said at the mourning ceremony for the death of the Muslim Prophet in Mashhad: “Western democracy puts people in the place of God, which is polytheistic; and we believe people should be where they are and consider the law of God supreme. If some people stood against Islam, one cannot stand idly by and sacrifice the well-being of the people for a few people.”

Ahmad Khatami continued: “In the life of the Prophet and the infallible Imams, love and compassion for the people is the principle; compassion should be service and love for the people but the people should not be placed in the place of God. Humane treatment of all people has been the way of all prophets and imams. Compassionate treatment of people is something that will be received if one has a brief insight into the Quran and hadiths. Prophets and imams were tolerant of their opponents. In some cases though, principles cannot be followed and compromise does not make sense. The Messenger of God observed the condition of humanity, but if some people stood against Islam one cannot stand idly by and sacrifice the well-being of the people for a few people.”
