Change of German strategic ties against Russia

The German Foreign Ministry on Saturday stated that Germany agreed to impose a “targeted restriction” on Moscow in response to increased pressure on Berlin to agree to cut off Russian access to Swift’s banking system.

Meanwhile, the German coalition government, has said, it wants to avoid “side effects” by restricting Russia’s access to Swift.

In recent hours, Germany has been under pressure from many of its allies in the European Union to accept Russia’s cut-off of Swift. The President of Ukraine called on Berlin to show “courage” in this regard.

Germany also authorized the shipment of German-made weapons to Ukraine. This means that the Netherlands will be able to send 400 German anti-tank weapons to Ukraine.

This is a major shift in German policy and could increase European military aid to Ukraine since many of the weapons in Europe are at least partly German-made, which means, Berlin’s opinion on their use and export plays a role.
